Quality, cost and delivery remain fundamental to manufacturing. But the industry is evolving as products become more complex, technologies advance and global supply chains continue to change. Malaysia’s industrial direction reflects this transformation.
Under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), “Tech Up for a Digitally Vibrant Nation” is one of four national industrial missions, with technology adoption and digitalisation identified as important drivers of innovation and productivity.
The ambition to transform 3,000 factories into smart factories by 2030 further signals where Malaysian manufacturing is heading.
Smart manufacturing is more than automation. It is about connecting technologies, processes and information to create manufacturing operations that can operate more intelligently and respond more effectively to change.
For Malaysia, this transformation presents an opportunity to build on the manufacturing capabilities already established and move further towards higher-value, technology-driven activities.
It also changes the meaning of competitiveness. Efficiency remains important, but increasingly, manufacturers need the ability to integrate technology, improve operational visibility, strengthen supply chain resilience and continuously optimise how they operate.
Sustainability is becoming part of this transition as well. Smarter resource management, better process visibility and technology-enabled operations can support the industry’s broader move towards more efficient and sustainable manufacturing.
